Sitka was the capital of Russian America.

The transfer of Alaska from Russia took place in Sitka in 1867 for a purchase price of $7.2 million.

The only dormant volcano in southeast Alaska, Mount. Edgecumbe, is near Sitka.

The John O’Connell Bridge linking Sitka to Japonski Island is the first and only cable-stayed bridge in Alaska and opened in 1972.

Sitka is the fourth largest city by population in the state.
